Uber Completes Acquisition of Delivery Hero, Expanding Global Operations to Near 100 Markets
Uber has finalized its acquisition of Delivery Hero, a move set to increase its market reach significantly. The deal integrates Delivery Hero's services under Uber's existing platforms.
Business Expansion and Synergies
CEO Daniel (Dango) Costa highlighted that this acquisition extends Uber's operations to nearly 100 markets, effectively doubling the scope for both mobility and delivery services. Future value is expected to be created through shared technologies and user bases.
Chief Financial Officer Balaji Krishnamurthy detailed that Uber currently employs a unified global technology platform for its delivery operations, whereas most of Delivery Hero's services use standalone systems, except for their Korean division. Integrating Delivery Hero's infrastructure into Uber's advanced stack will yield substantial cost savings and operational improvements.
According to the timeline, integration phases are scheduled to complete by 2027, with planning in 2028 and implementation starting in 2029, focusing on merging common technological elements and overlapping teams to enhance efficiency.
Autonomous Driving as Core Strategy
Uber positions autonomous driving as a key growth driver for the next decade. Costa emphasized the goal to lead in autonomous commercial platforms, which involve physical artificial intelligence tailored to varying regulatory environments across regions. The technology is advancing through cities like seven operational sites planned to grow to fifteen, involving partners such as Nuro and Zoox.
The company invests 100 million dollars in a long-term plan for autonomous ecosystems, aiming to leverage partnerships to amplify funding for software collaborators and vehicle support systems.
AI Integration and Efficiency Gains
Uber's viewpoint on AI differs from standard industry trends; Costa advocates for incremental advancements over disruptive changes, pointing to AI-driven shopping carts that boost average order sizes by roughly double conventional levels. Expected applications span ad targeting, restaurant listings, and inventory prediction to improve user engagement and conversion rates.
Krishnamurthy provided insights into internal metrics: nearly all engineers utilize AI coding tools, leading to doubled code productivity per employee. The company aims to apply AI to support functions, reduce costs, and slow hiring without compromising output.
